cancer of adrenal gland and cervix

My sister (aged 72) has  today (12th March) been diagnosed with Adrenal gland cancer , and the return of cancer to the cervix ( which she was clear of last year) - communicated by telephone!

She was admitted to hospital 8th January with swollen legs, which resulted in 2 stents being fitted and issue of nodules on her kidneys needing to be investigated.

She was discharged after 8 days awaiting further information from the hospital re her condition- cancer or not? In the interim period, she has had several scans and blood tests, but she experiences continuous pain in her back (treated with tramadol) and has lost nearly 2 stone of her 8 stone in weight. She is struggling to eat anything, and is very unwell.

a) are these symptoms - severe back pain and not eating- consistent with a diagnosis of adrenal gland/cervical cancer?

b) what is the treatment for these conditions?

c) what is the prognosis for a adrenal gland cancer?

She is very underweight, seriously ill  so I doubt she would be able to handle very invasive treatment or serious radio therapy as she has previously had bracha treatment for her cervical cancer.

I am very worried about her.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, ChrisS1.
I’m sorry to hear about your sister’s diagnosis, and I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you both, especially given the circumstances surrounding her treatment and the uncertainty she’s facing.
The symptoms you mentioned, such as severe back pain and loss of appetite, can sometimes be linked to cancers of the adrenal glands and cervix, though they may vary from person to person. It’s understandable to have many questions at this stage, but please keep in mind that I’m unable to offer medical advice.
Regarding treatment, therapies for adrenal gland and cervical cancers can vary depending on the specifics of the diagnosis, including the cancer's stage and other factors. It’s important to have a conversation with her healthcare team about what options may be suitable for her, especially considering her overall health and previous treatments.
As for prognosis, this can depend on several factors including the cancer type, stage, and individual response to treatment. I would encourage you to discuss her specific situation with her medical team, who will be best placed to give you detailed information.
If you’d like to talk things through with a nurse, our helpline is available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
Sending you and your sister my very best, and I hope you find the support you need.
