Appendix removed and awaiting results, Appointment for in 4 weeks time, does that indicate good news?

Hi there,

Long story short, my appendix and a bit of bowel were removed a few days ago and now I'm awaiting the test results from it, as biopsies were not able to be taken prior to the operation, for fear of rupturing my appendix.

However a clinic appointment letter with my consultant, arrived today, but it's in 4 weeks time.

Therefore my feeling is, with that length of wait for the appointment, surely it must mean good news, as presumably it'd be a quicker appointment than 4 weeks, if it was not good news?

To be fair I have no idea how long these tests on specimens take though, so I'm just guessing my results are back, hence my clinic appointment being made.

Can I ask please, what have others found regarding appointment times after testing?

Thanks for your advice.

  • Hello Anxietycentral

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had your appendix and part of your bowel removed. I hope that you're recovering well from the surgery.

From what you've said in your post it sounds like the follow-up appointment has been automatically sent after your procedure. It would be unusual for biopsy results to have been returned so quickly after they were taken.

It's natural that you're feeling anxious about waiting for your results. We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult. try to remain positive. Worrying won't change the results but it will leave you feeling worse so in the meantime try to concentrate on feeling well again after your surgery.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses at any point you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope the team are able to offer some reassurance when you see them. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks so much for your reply,

I phoned the hospital yesterday as I couldn't cope and they did say the appointment was made for when roughly they expected my results back, and to allow time for the MDT meeting.

It's just such a long time to wait and I don't do well with worry at the best of times.

I really feel for everyone waiting so long, it's a nightmare.

I've been misdiagnosed for a while, so I think that's adding to my worry.

Thanks again for taking the time
