Post hysterectomy HPV positive with high grade moderate dyskaryosis

Just over a year ago I had a total hysterectomy due to a diagnosis of HPV positive with high grade moderate dyskaryosis. I have now had two post op vault smears and both have come back showing I am still HPV positive with high grade moderate dyskaryosis and have no idea what this means in terms of ongoing treatment options. There is nothing left to remove surgically as far as I am aware (uterus, tubes, cervix all gone). Has anyone had experience of this? Should I be worried?

  • Welcome to the forum Clare1970 although I'm sorry to hear both of your smear tests results have shown you still have HPV with high grade moderate dyskaryosis, despite having a total hysterectomy.

I know this must be worrying but try not to panic if you can. Much easier said than done, I know, but hopefully the support and advice you receive from some of our members will help to steady your nerves whilst you wait.

We also have a team of cancer nurses you can discuss this with on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

We're thinking of you Clare and hope you won't have to wait too long to find out what happens next.

    Kind regards,

  •    I had a hysterectomy in 2020 following another high pre cancerous & HPV result from my smear. I was threatened with this back in 2004 following 3 high reading smears and 2 Lletz procedures. Luckily my 3rd smear came back clear and I went on to have my 2 gorgeous boys. In 2020 as soon as they told me the results of my smear, I opted for the hysterectomy. My husband left 6 months after & I have not had a relationship since. Every vault smear since has been HPV positive and each time they absolutely kill me! Even the speculum going in is painful! I ask why? Is it because I'm no longer sexually active & they can't answer! I bled on and off for 1 & half years afterwards too and they could find no reason other than vaginal dryness (menopause). I have just had my latest vault smear on Wednesday and I'm still in absolute agony today (mother's day) 4 days later! Cramping, bloated, really painful lower tummy & the emotional pain of being violated that I now have following each procedure (I was actually sick & passed out following one procedure where they used the claw to extract tissue from my vault area without anaesthetic! Totally barbaric & I researched this procedure in which the article stated no anaestheticis needed! I wanted to find the author & make them have the procedure then see if they still thought anaesthetic was not needed!). Last year they gave me an ultrasound as I was positive something was not right but they found nothing (it took them a while to find my ovaries as they float about apparently and they had to use an internal probe with them being difficult to find with the external probe) I'm 50 this year & feel like no one can be bothered to find answers, the male consultant actually told me before performing my hysterectomy that he didn't say it would get rid of the pre cancer cells or HPV! I asked what are my options now then if I've got no cervix to remove & he told me they would start removing my vaginally wall tissue! I refused to see him again & moved to a female consultant. She got me in to see a counsellor who basically told me I wasn't dying & need to stop focusing on negatives! I trained as a midwife & had to leave in my final year to have the hysterectomy so I know my body & how it works. This does not feel right but I feel unheard & ignored. I'm thinking of refusing any more treatment as what is the point? Sorry I can't give you any answers but hopefully you can use this information to be more assertive with your treatment going forward.
