DCIS - had surgery, radiotherapy next. Can anyone give any advice, as I don't know how it will affect me

I was 50 last June. My mum had breast cancer age 54. I had a routine mammogram in December,  very conscious about going as have small breasts, called for a repeat mammogram in January. Found to have classifications left breast,  a week later had a biopsy,  two weeks later told her I needed surgery for DCIS, Which I had two weeks ago today. Now waiting for histology report to make sure they removed all of it and then being advised I need a five day course of radiotherapy. Any advice about radiotherapy would be beneficial as I don’t know how that will affect me. Hugs to everyone going through this. Sam

  • Hi Sam,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I hope you are getting on OK - it sounds like things have moved fairly quickly over the last few weeks, I'm sure it has been a lot to deal with.

We have some information on our website about DCIS, and on the page there is a link to treatments, where you may be able to find out a little more. Do of course discuss with your doctor any questions you have about what to expect as well.

If ever you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses, they're available on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

Otherwise, hopefully you'll get some more replies to your post here soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi. I had radiotherapy after lumpectomy and lymph node clearance last year. It wasn't too bad at all at the time, although the room was cold because of the machines. I wasn't worried about having to take of my bra as the staff were lovely and made me feel completely at ease every session. During the treatment I felt ok, a bit tired but not that awful. Afterwards I had some discoloration and some blistering and soreness under my breast but they gave me gels and creams to put on it which helped loads. The fatigue didn't kick in straight away, only after a few weeks, so it's worth resting whenever you can. Now I have a 'suntan' underneath and some pock marks on the breast itself but I moisturise every day and the skin seems ok apart from that.

Hope your treatment goes well. x

Hello thank you very much for the information which was interesting and useful. Did you have just a five day course of radiotherapy ? Many thanks. Stay well  x

Yes, I had 5 days. I can recommend Moogoo udder restore cream to moisturise the area. I had a free sample from the charity Little Lifts and it's light and soaks in well too. x

Thank you so much for the quick reply. That’s interesting to know about the fatigue that it’s not straight away. I’m hoping to try and carry on working as a staff nurse post radiotherapy, but I am on a very supportive unit, so might just see how I go. I will look out for that cream as I’ve got a Little Lifts box coming to me.
