Colonoscopy fear

I am due to have a colonoscopy in 6 days and my anxiety is through the roof. I have been passing a lot of blood so do understand the need to investigate, however, due to problems with my bowels I have had this procedure twice before. Both times the procedure was ended due to severe pain and the inability to get the scope through the bends as I have a contorted bowel. The thought of going through this again is really upsetting me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi Suzi You're bound to be scared and upset after what happened the first 2 times who wouldn't be ,I'm surprised they haven't offered an alternate way to see what's going on this time ,If you feel you can't go through with it again in this way you could let them know and see what they say as there have been others in your position who couldn't have this procedure because of the different reasons .

  • Thank you for your reply. My anxiety is really bad at the moment. I’ve done some research and there are alternatives as you’ve said. I’m going to ring the secretary on Monday to see if she can speak to the consultant, alternatively if need be I’ll see if PALS can help

  • Yes I agree there's no need for anyone to go through that when there are alternatives ,I've had 2 and both of mine were pain free ,I'm sure they'll sort things out for you .
