Positive FIT Test

Hello,

Just needed somewhere to share/vent as feel like I'm living in limbo!! Since having my little girl 15 months ago. I've noticed I'm more sensitive with certain foods Milk, bread etc. Not a bad sensitivity just get a bit bloated and stomach makes some funny noises. Since November I've been having pains in abdominal area mostly to left side and under ribs. Went to see GP who mentioned acid reflux and to cut out certain foods and got medication. I noticed I felt less full when on medication but overall still get the pains. Also had full blood count tests which were normal, stool sample also normal but had a positive FIT test of 22

The pains I get are pretty minor I do notice them each day but doesn't stop be doing anything like exercise. Went back to see Doc again on Monday and because of FIT positive test and I have lost almost 2 stone since having baby (but I am breastfeeding) he referred me to the Correctal Cancer team however as I am only 33 they rejected the referral on Tuesday!!!

My GP has been great and wrote straight away to the Gastroenterology team just seeking advice but yet to hear anything back.

I am 33 and with a young family the unknown is driving me a little mad

Anyone had smiling experiences with a FIT test of 22 but everything else normal

Do I just need to sit tight and wait for next steps but don't know when or what that will be?!

  • Could you ask your GP to refer you directly for a colonoscopy? Or to gastroenterology, not colorectal cancer specifically? A colonoscopy is an uncomfortable proceedure but your GP would have more information to back up your referral with. A gastroenterologist would be able to look at your cancer, and likely diagnose cancer if it's there. It could be something else. It all feel so much more difficult when there are barriers though, it makes the stressing spiral and like you aren't being heard or cared for...

  • Thanks for the reply. So I've seen the referral letter my GP sent to the gastroenterology team on Tueaday and he has asked more for advice on next steps and if they would see me or carry or any further tests my GP can carry out. So far there is no reply from the Gastro team.

I understand i didnt fit the criteria for the 2 week pathway for Correctal Cancer but as they have rejected it, just because of age seems bizzare. I would hate to take an appointments away from someone who really needs it if my problem isn't Cancer related but you never know and the uncertainty that there could be a problem and I'm just waiting around is not a nice feeling

  • GI consultant  [gastroenterologist]  looks at much more than cancers.. given the reference to bloating/food sensitivity to milk etc ....possibly the best pathway for the GP referral...Colorectal Consultant specific to bowel disease/polyps etc. In ref to  colonoscopy being an uncomfortable .. I  have experienced discomfort with previous colonoscopies but was given mild sedation for my latest one [ normal procedure with my Colorectal consultant]  can honestly say I was comfortable and completely unaware of the process being done...
