Scared stiff and confused! been referred for possible tonsil cancer

Hi, I was referred to the on all ENT Team at the hospital by my Dr as I have had 3 lots of antibiotics for what was suspected Tonsillitis and a feeling of a small lump behind my tonsil.

The first Dr I saw after 7 hours said ‘it’s a Quinsy we’ll lance it and you should feel immediate relief”. However, her ‘boss’ asked me questions about smoking etc and said he’s referring me to rule out Tonsil cancer, as one tonsil is bigger than the other. I was obviously upset.

I asked him if it could be anything else and he was very curt and dismissive. I was prescribed antibiotics (which I have to go back and pick up tomorrow as it would be another 6 hours wait for them).

I left feeling as if my life has been blown apart, I don’t have any reassurance and I’m not sure who to speak to. Should I speak to my GP to see if they can support with this?

  • Hello there   ,

Sorry to hear that you are having to deal with this shock . Certainly speak to your GP who hopefully has a better approach when speaking to patients . The hospital will usually write to the GP about the recent appt. but it's helpful for GP to be kept up to date , and they can then give advice on pain relief .

At the next hospital appointment, which should be within 2 weeks from receiving the referral,   you'll be looked after more kindly  I'm sure . Then you will know what is causing your problem. Let's hope the "quinsey" doctor was right . What a lovely old fashioned word that is.

Of course you're scared.... try the helpline on here or Macmillan ... both very helpful for anxiety . Also , try Bach rescue remedy to steady your nerves while you wait . Be brave ,  don't Google , we've got you .

    Zillah

  • Thank you - your reply and kindness made me cry.

I’ve just spoken to the GP about what happened and how it’s affected my Health Anxiety and she was lovely. She also apologised for his manner, which was 100% not her fault.

After a sleepless night and lots of Anxiety tears I’m trying to put things into more perspective… before I run the gauntlet of going to wait for another 8 hours for the antibiotics.

Thanks also for the advice and helpline numbers. It’s very much appreciated.

  • Thank you so much for your kind reply. X
