Colonoscopy- 12 biopsy’s taken but colonoscopy normal

Last week I was referred for urgent cancer screening as blood was in my poo test and experiencing other symptoms. Yesterday I had the colonoscopy the man that done it asked me why I was here and I said my doctor referred to you because of blood found in my stool samples and other symptoms. He laughed and said ‘ nothing will be wrong’ indicating because of my age. I had it done and when I was waiting the nurse come and spoke to me and said the colonoscopy was normal just an anal fissure was detected. But on my report it says 12 biopsy’s were taken and I remember seeing that on the screen. Does anyone know why they would take these biopsy’s and why so many?

  • Hi Jessicajane13 and welcome to the forum.

I'm glad to hear you received good news from the nurse after your colonoscopy although I'm sorry for the worry the biopsies, and how many were taken during the procedure, is causing.

Taking biopsies (removing tissue samples) is quite common during a colonoscopy, but I can't answer your question about why 12 were taken. Your medical team will the best people to ask about this but if you'd like to get a general understanding then you're welcome to give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to help.

A lot of our members have had colonoscopies so hopefully those who have had a similar number of biopsies taken will be along soon to share their experiences with you..

    Kind regards,
