Why would I just get a letter?

Hi there,

Long story short a large bulging appendix was seen on my colonoscopy, so I was fast tracked for a CT scan, which I had within 6 days.

It's taken a further 2 weeks for the scan to be looked at and the report to be written of the CT findings, (which is fast track I'm informed). Within 1 day of this report being sent to my consultant, I was informed by her secretary that a letter is being sent to myself and my GP, but the contents were not allowed to be discussed.

They've actually seen and taken photos of the large appendiceal bulge on colonoscopy and I'm in quite a lot of pain in that region, but they failed to pick anything up on a CT they gave me 6 months ago, for the same continuing pain.

They only did the colonoscopy due to bleeding and a very high FIT test score so 2 week referral from GP, or I would still just be left in pain. My liver function tests have all gone high and LDH levels have also gone high. (Not sure if they mean anything).

Has anybody else encountered this kind of thing, no communications via an appointment, or phone about anything, just a letter being sent?

I'm scared to think the CT didn't pick anything up again, so they're just discharging me again, despite the bulge actually being seen on colonoscopy.

  • I’m apparently also a strange case- have been busy chasing for this last week. No results from histology on only 2 biopsies that were taken from my transverse colon. I had issues with sigmoid but nothing further mentioned from that either!

however by email, eventually, I get confirmation that I am still on the cancer pathway under a colorectal surgeon. Yet it’s taken 2 weeks chasing secretaries to hear back initially my report was being sent as lab had the results quickly

to then lab isn’t ready to authorise the teport

to now….colleagues are chasing for your histology & you are still under the cancer pathway. We will be in touch once histology returns.

this is all ok doesn’t worry me like before however, why still on the pathway when initial report said diagnosis clear but remain on cancer pathway?!!

usually within 10 days people get a nurse as contact plus are booked for various other scans in the waiting time…

this has NOT happened to me but all also seems strange as they’d of diagnosed IBD & milder disorders there & then.

you have not been forgotten so do not panic!
but do NOT feel guilty about chasing up daily from different perspectives/angles eg gp then consultants secretary then the hospitals imagining dept

email helps & you have a copy so where you can, do chase that way as then it can’t be ignored!

    sending love

    C Xx

  • Thank you for your reply,

    I just don't know what's going on.

They've already sent a colonoscopy report to the GP saying no evidence of cancer, then on second page of report, with only the photos, showing the bulging appendix, there's a line saying it needs imaging fast track, the tumour they say they suspect, is a cancer.

I've read that an appendix bulge is never just nothing and needs dealing with quickly as it can rupture.

I've not had any consultation, just the colonoscopy and CT, now apparently a letter is coming and to GP, which feels like it's going to be a referral back to the GP.

I've already gone through the hospital pals, as I was referred in December and was given the wrong scope, sigmoid instead of colonoscopy first, then the polyps they removed were logged as hyperplastic, when they were classed as adenomas upon removal.

It's just a huge catalogue of errors.

Could it be that the appendix doesn't fall under colerectal and so I need to be referred again to a different department?

  • Sorry you're going through this chaos too Chantetz xx

  • Yes actually double check that change incase it has gone under a new separate referral.

cant & yet sadly, I can believe you having the wrong scope test- that’s ridiculous! Especially when including polyps being removed- that’s from what I’ve read, is usually only via colonoscopy for ease & to be able to send the biopsies off.

it’s a relief you’ve at least had scans offered but no *** use when given such daunting results that are then leaving you high & dry waiting in that horrid unknown limbo zone!

chase wherever whoever you can & do double check referrals alongside any names you can contact on previous paperwork.

do keep in touch with how you get on

    Love C Xx

  • Bless you, thanks.

I'll have just wait to see what this letter says.

I hope you get some answers soon too, it's like each day is a week, when you're worrying. xx

  • That it does. Especially when some surrounding you talk cancer treatment before anything official then others the reverse saying nothing at all is wrong all in my head xx

  • So a bit of an update, I didn't even get any letter, but instead got a phonecall the next day telling me I needed another scan urgently.

Apparently I needed a chest CT, not sure why I'd need a chest one for appendix problem, but had it done anyway.

So now today I've been informed that I'm pencilled in for surgery and given a date, an MDT meeting is early next week and it's all a whirlwind, especially as I don't even have a proper diagnosis given to me yet, other than bulging appendix, but apparently not appendicitis?

I still don't really know what's going on, but am seeing the consultant at the back end of this week and presumably all will be explained then, well hopefully it will.
