Hysteroscopy

I had a transvaginal scan and they found what they think was a polyp but said there was lots of tissue from blood making it hard to see clearly. They have advised a hysteroscopy to investigate and remove whatever there is. They said it’s just like a smear test and not painful.

I found the scan very painful and Im not looking forward to the procedure. Can I request a General anaesthetic or some pain relief. There seems to be a high failure rate for these carried out without any anaesthesia. Not sure I can go through with it without being knocked out.

  • Hi I had it done ,I found it very painful although some find it ok some find it bearable some find it unbearable ,I'm sure you can request a GA but it might take a while to get an appointment .

  • Hi,

Yes you can request it done under GA. From my experience, it was very painful, although over quickly x

  • I had a hysteroscopy in January and it was nothing like a smear or vaginal ultrasound. For some women it is like period pains but for others the pain is severe. The trouble is you don’t know how you will tolerate it until you are having the procedure. I have had previous biopsies and I did tolerate them. Unfortunately I passed out and stopped breathing during my hysteroscopy. They had to then arrange this under a GA which I had yesterday morning. They do offer pain relief like gas & air, local anaesthetic but most hospitals will offer sedation or GA. Speak to your consultant about the option for GA
