First smear - HPV positive and abnormal cells

Received my letter yesterday saying that I am HPV positive and there are also cell changes. Freaking out a bit as this was my first smear and nurse at the time told me everything looked very healthy! I have read all the information I can get my hands on but it is a worrying situation. If anyone has anything reassuring to help me, that would be amazing. Thank you!

  • Hello TeachRE

I'm sorry to hear about your recent cervical screening results. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about this news.

An abnormal cervical screening test result means that you have changes in the cells covering the neck of your womb (cervix). It's important to try and keep in mind that abnormal cervical cells are not the same as cervical cancer.  You might find it helpful to read through some of the information on our website about abnormal cervical cells

I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to offer any information, advice and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for an appointment at the hospital to have the cell changes treated and the team will be able to give you some reassurance.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
