Worried sick - partner who is 53 will be having a colonoscopy on Saturday. Has anyone over 50 had a good outcome?

Hello,

My partner is 53 and has a colonoscopy booked for Saturday. He had a fit score of 70 but has noticed a subtle change in bowel habits for several months. We have a young daughter together and I’m completely terrified at the outcome of the tests. He’s my world.

The only way I’m coping right now is reading posts on here but lots of the posts seem to relate to younger people. I’m wondering if there are any people over 50 who have had a colonoscopy but when everything has turned out ok? I’m clutching at straws as I’m convinced that things won’t be ok.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

  • Hello LizzyP18 and welcome to Cancer Chat.
I can only imagine how stressful this time must be for both you and your partner. That said, it's reassuring that he’s having the colonoscopy, as it’s an important step in investigating any concerns. Many people over 50 have had colonoscopies, and in many cases, the outcome is positive.
For more information on what to expect, our website has a page on colonoscopies that might offer some reassurance: Colonoscopy - what to expect. It covers things like the procedure itself and common outcomes, which could hopefully ease your mind a little.
If you’re feeling especially anxious, remember that our nurses are here for you, and you can always reach out to them for support or advice. They’re available at 0808 800 4040, and they’ll be happy to answer any questions, no matter how small.
Lastly, I hope everything goes smoothly on Saturday and that your partner receives positive news.
Sending my best wishes to both of you.
