Really worried about pagets diseaae

Hi everyone

Hoping someone can reassure me or say they've been in a very similar situation.

For the past 8 years I've had really yellow scabby nipples. I was pregnant at the time and asked my midwife about it and she said it looks like thrush, recomended some cream and that was that. Well it never really cleared up but it's never bothered me. The past couple of weeks both my nipples have been burning and very itchy so I went to the doctor.

She examined both my breasts and got another doctor in for a second opinion. No lumps or bumps.  She said to the other doctor she was concerned about pagets. He then told her because it's in both nipples and has been for a long time it's very unlikely it's pagets and he thinks eczema. They've given me a strong steroid cream and I have to return to the doctor in 3 weeks to see if its made any difference and if nothing they will refer me to the breast clinic so they can look more into it.

So it's been 5 days since I've had the steroid cream and it's made no difference at all and I've got to wait another 2 weeks to go back to the doctor. I know its not been long but I'm starting to panic more now. I've googled it (I know i shouldnt) and nipple eczema is often misdiagnosed and is pagets.

I'm losing sleep and it's constantly on my mind that I have cancer. I'm only 31 and I have three children and it just scares the life out of me.

  • Hello Leefree123

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing concerns about your breast health. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious. Unfortunately, we know that many people turn to the internet to look for answers and what happens most often is that the conflicting information leaves them feeling more worried. If you can try to avoid googling it may help with some of the anxiety you're feeling.

It's good to know that you've already seen a GP and that they didn't have any immediate cause for concern regarding your symptoms. It's understandable that you're worried but try to stay positive and if things don't clear up with the steroid cream you've been prescribed then you know that the GP has reassured you that they will refer you for a specialist opinion at the breast clinic.

We know that it can sometimes help to talk with someone about how you're feeling. I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can to help you get through the next few weeks. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you get some answers soon Leefree123 and that the doctors can set you on the pathway to improving your symptoms. Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
