Fit test back positive

Hi all,

I’ve just turned 46 and have had irregular bowel habits for most of my adult life.  I recently had some blood when I went to the loo and thought it best to get checked out, mainly because my dad has bowel cancer which is now in his lungs.  He is well and has had surgery.  I was shocked to be phoned by my gp today to say that my fit test was positive at 53 ug/g and that she would send me for a colonoscopy within 2 weeks.  I’m scared because of the family history, I take after my dad in many ways.  I’m mainly scared because of my children. My youngest is having mental health issues alongside going through GCSEs and the last thing he needs is his mum being poorly or worse.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has had the same result with a similar family history and how it went.

Thank you

  • Hi Dogmum and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry for the worry your fit test result is causing, especially given everything that has happened with your dad.

I hope this information I've found about fit tests and what the results could mean will help put your mind at ease but hopefully you will hear back from some of our members who have had the same result with a similar family history soon.

I know this is a scary time so if you'd like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. Our nurses are very easy to talk to and will do all that they can to help.

We're sending you all our support Dogmum and wishing you all the best with your colonoscopy.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Thank you very much for your reply and the information you have shared.  I’m very grateful

  • Hello Dogmum,

just read your post and it occurred to me that you could not expect a balanced view to your question on this site. All those that had a negative outcome are long gone and off getting on with their lives.

l realise the anxiety and stress you are experiencing and can understand your desire for hope and reassurance , its a horrible space you currently occupy. It could be a number of issues causing your symptoms and your wish is understandably, that its not the one you fear.

The colonoscopy will answer your questions where nobody else can.

As a ten year survivor of stage 4 bowel cancer l hope your wait is not too long, and the outcome is favourable, in the meantime try not to overstress about the unknown and keep your feet on the ground,

be as gentle as you can with yourself until then,

    David

  • Thank you for your reply David and you are so right. There are no answers until I have had the procedure but I will try and do as you suggest. Brilliant to hear that you are doing so well.

    thank you

  •    I just wanted to say a further thank you for your kind words. They have resonated with me so much and have made the whole situation a whole lot more bearable. I am very grateful that you took the time to reply and it was just what I needed to hear.

    thank you again,

    Sally
