Unconfirmed diagnosis

I attended a private consultation 11 days ago for an urgent referral for a breast lump.  I was examined and told the lump was suspicious.  I had blood tests and was booked in for a mammogram, ultrasound, biopsies and a CT scan.  I received a call from the consultant last Weds to say bloods showed a good sign but said I have hypercalcemia and a parathyroid adenoma.  He had no other results as they were due the following day and that he would be in touch.  I was told by the CT Consultant Radiographer that I should hear the results by Friday, alas no call.  I have exhausted Google, searching info on the findings of the bloods and my mind is over-analysing everything.  I just cannot understand the reason for the delay in informing me of these results.  This was an urgent referral 11 days ago from my GP.   Has anyone experienced a long wait to receive blood results?  Thank you.

  • Hello Yum-yum197,

The length of time to wait for results is hard to determine and this can be for all sorts of reasons. There's also a high demand for health services, as I'm sure you know.  When youre worried that you may have cancer, it can be tempting to look for answers online, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better so it's best to try and stay away from that.

In the meantime, there is more information on urgent referrals on our website. I hope that's useful and that you won't have to wait too long before getting your results.

    Best wishes,
