Worried about mouth cancer

Hi.

about a month ago I had a sore throat and looked in my mouth for the first time in years. My throat was sore at the bottom right and it was quite red. But I also notice at the other side a white squishy looking little lump up on my soft palate. It didn’t hurt and for all I know it might have been there a while. I have seen three doctors who said it didn’t look like cancer but the third doctor is referring me on the two week pathway. This is due partly to my health anxiety and partly because it has not gone away and he couldn’t say what it was. I had bloods done and they came back normal.

im just so worried though. I am really struggling with the anxiety and googling like mad. I just can’t help it. I keep coming back to soft palate cancer. I used to smoke but gave up over twenty five years ago. Not sure if that’s relevant. No pain, just a bit of irritation.

  • Hello Merino1,

It's good that you've been referred and encouraging that your blood tests have come back normal.

The best thing to do is to speak to the doctor about your concerns at your next appointment and you can read about the urgent referral process on our website. When you’re worried that you may have cancer, it can be tempting to think the worst or look for answers online, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. And you'll only know more once further tests are done. It can be nerve-wracking waiting for an appointment, but there are ways of coping with waiting for news on our website.

    I hope this is helpful,
