Really Worried

I have had a slight tenderness in the left side of my throat (just in front of my tonsil) for about 6 or 7 weeks now. I went to see my GP two weeks ago, who sent my for bloods and told me to go back in two weeks time. I just went to my GP appointment and she has put me on a 2 week referral with Max Fac / ENT. She said that she is not overly concerned and on physical examination this evening, she hasn't noticed any change since two weeks ago. She said that she is fast tracking me because its been going on for several weeks and she wants me to get peace of mind.  It's not causing me any pain or discomfort. It just feels slightly tender when I swallow on the left side. I already suffer with health anxiety and my mental health has not been good for a while now and now this on top of everything else is making me feel horrendous. Has anyone else experienced this or anything similar?

I should also mention that I don't have a dentist so have not been able to see one. I think I would have chosen to see a dentist instead of a GP if I could have, because they know more about stuff inside your mouth and throat.

  • Hello LunarLou

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing problems with discomfort in your throat recently. It's good to know you've already seen your GP who has conducted some initial tests and referred you now to see a specialist.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult and if you struggle with health anxiety as well then the wait can be more tiresome. If you think it may help to talk through your concerns with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment and the specialists will be able to offer some reassurance when you see them.

    Best wishes,
