Clavicle lymphnode - swelling and shrinking for years

I have had a lymph node under my left clavicle for around 8-9 years now that swells to great big sizes that easily noticeable from far away. The only problem is that because it’s behind the collar bone when it shrinks it’s impossible to see it. Whenever I have been to see a doctor I’ve only ever been able to show them pictures of when it’s swollen. What’s worrying is that it’s completely random when it swells and it’s recurring more and more often now, nothing related to illness or infection.

It is rubbery to touch, moveable and not painful unless it’s swollen. When swollen it makes movement in the neck area so painful.

I had an ultrasound a few years ago and they looked behind the collar bone and saw it just to say it’s a regular lymph node. I can’t understand why a regular lymph node would act this way?

I’m so so worried, and feel like no doctor is taking me seriously when I’m saying I know it’s not right. I’ve got no other symptoms but just the one thing feels big enough to be serious. Has anyone else had a similar issue? I’d really appreciate any help or guidance.

  • Hello Hs146

I'm sorry to hear that you have some ongoing concerns about a reactive lymph node. It's good to hear that the tests you've had to date haven't given any immediate cause for concern but I can understand that not having a firm answer about why this particular node swells is causing you some anxiety.

We often get people posting here on the forum who find themselves in similar positions. Hopefully, you will be able to connect with someone who also has experience with a recurrent swollen node.

In the meantime, if it would help to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Fridya 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that you're able to find some reassurance HS146 to help you move forward.

    Best wishes,
