Referral

Hi I’m new to this but I’m worried out my mind and just need to discuss what’s going on . I’ve found a lump in my breast  quite a squishy lump quite sore just under my armpit and been doctors who said they are not worried about it at all but are going to refer me anyway as they know how anxious I get and I’m just at a bad place at moment as my brother been diagnosed just this week with prostate cancer so she feels I need referring so I’m not worrying but why refer me if she’s not worried any help would be so helpful

thank you

  • Hi Bcg,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your brother's diagnosis and can understand that this will add to your stress levels.

It is a fact that 80% of the people, who are referred to the breast clinic, do not get a cancer diagnosis. Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma, or are due to naturally lumpy breasts. It sounds as if your GP knows you quite well and is aware that, despite what she's said to reassure you, you will still feel unsure in the future. It is impossible to tell for sure whether a lump is benign or cancerous, without having something like a biopsy. I am not a doctor, but I understand that soft, squishy lumps, which are mobile, are usually less sinister than firmer, uneven shaped ones, which are well attached. These clinics are there to rule out cancer as well as to diagnose it,

It sounds as if your GP is trying to give you complete peace of mind by referring you, even though she doesn't expect anything untoward. I sincerely hope that your appointment goes well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Jolamone

thank you so much for your reply it has really helped me so much . I did get the feeling that my doctor was doing it more to reassure me because at the moment it’s been such a terrible few months for me whete I’ve had to take sick leave from work because of all the stress I’m under firstly one of my brothers very sick with sepsis so caring for him then just as I’m getting him better this diagnosis with my other brother has sent me into a meltdown so I can see why she feels need to refer me . Just you find a limp you think straight away jts cancer I’m probally over thinking it so everything you have said has just made me feel so much better and I thank you for that .

i will let you know how I get on and I will try not over thinking it it till I’ve been seen

    thank you
