Unexpected Biopsy and the wait

I was referred to the breast clinic after I found a lump in my breast, as a family member had coincidentally also mentioned they also found a lump and was told on their appointment it was a cyst, I was very much expecting the same.

I am 24 years old, my mum has had cancer but not anything breast related and the consultant gave the impression when he asked what type that it would have any influence. I thought I would have a scan and it would be a cyst or something, ended up getting a biopsy that day. I was told I would get results in post between a week or 2, it's been 10 days and I've not heard, its always the wait that's the worst though.

Sorry for rant, it was needed

  • Hello Leah_May

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some concerns about your breast health. You did exactly the right thing in seeing your GP and it's good to know that you've already been seen at the breast clinic.

The majority of people seen by a specialist breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer. It may help to keep that in mind while you're waiting for your results.

Hopefully it won't be too much longer now and you will have some news from the hospital but don't be afraid to give them a call if you've not heard within the time frame you were given.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi sorry to jump on your post. I'm in a similar situation. Felt a lump, saw GP, fast track referral, seen in the breast clinic for an ultrasound and they decided to do a biopsy on 10th Jan. Was told they'd be having an MDT meeting today to discuss results. The wait is bloody awful. I'm 99% sure it will all be absolutely fine but I just want to know either way so I can crack on.

  • Hi Jenn,

    Thank you for your reply.

I've been reminding myself of exactly that all the time, most results are not cancerous and it's completely out of my control, so just keeping myself busy in the meantime (what i can control) and that's helped.

I've got a young child so I think at times it's more that which sparks thoughts but again try to just take a minute and try rationalise.

It's amazing you have a helpline as I'm sure it's been a life savour for so many, thank you so much for your continued support

Oh absolutely, it really is the wait that's always the hardest.

Did you call to find that out or was it popped out in a letter? I've heard nothing yet so 100% agree and just want to know so can move forward with whatever.

Hopefully you hear back in next couple of days and all is well :)

When I went to the clinic  on 10th Jan they just said I would hear back after the mdt on 20th which is today and I've not heard anything yet. I have the mymft app so I'm hoping something comes through on there soon. Best of luck to you hope you get the all clear xx
