Biopsy Results back but appointment in 4 weeks!

Afternoon,

Late October my GP referred me on the fast track cancer referral for two moles.
Early November one was fine and the other had a Excisional biopsy, was a very small mole and a good amount of skin removed.
Fast forward 10 weeks later, I chase up my results and they tell me the results are back but the Dr needs a second opinion- this will happen Friday and she would let me know the next steps.

Friday- I receive an online letter, stating I have an appointment with Dermatology & Plastics.
Now on the hospitals website it states Next steps for Skin Cancer is an appointment for Dermatology & Plastics, my issue is this appointment is in Four weeks!

So my question is am I to wait four weeks presuming the worst? I feel like this can’t be right :(

I’m planning to ring them on Monday but trying to manage my expectations if i do in-fact have to sit with this until the appointment.

Thank you!

  • Hi,

Sometimes histology have a problem with tissue samples that are borderline & they seek a second opinion. On rare occasions they may even need a third opinion & I'm wondering if this is what happened on Friday. If this is the case they have then pre-empted how long it will take to get the third opinion & they've sent you an appointment for 4 weeks time to give them that time. This is often done so that patients aren't left in limbo waiting for the next appointment date.

It's difficult waiting for another 4 weeks when they haven't got a definitive answer yet, but it's good in that they are making sure they have a proper result.

Good luck, I hope the results bring good news after all this wait. Please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
