Cervical cancer and uterine cancer

I recently had exxcessive post menopausal bleeding ( I have been on HRT for six months ) have not had a smear test in 5 years. Following a GP visit she referred me to the hospital - the note for the hospital dr stating prolonged post menopausal bleeding and that she had done an internal and noted blood on the cervix. all talk and tests then ( from seeing the dr at the hospital focused on uterine cancer - a biopsy ( turned out wrong) of the uterus - then a hysteroscopy and uterine biopsy. Fast forward 7 or 8 weeks and the biopsy result came back as the uterine cells were normal.
the thing is I am still bleeding and it hurts after sex. I just went for a smear test and assumed they would be testing for cell changes or cancer but I was told they just test for the virus that causes cervical cancer. I bled and as soon as she took the swab ( she actually said that as she took it - ‘it’s started to bleed’ and yes, now I am bleeding with each wipe.

my concern is - could all the bleeding and discomfort and pain be cervical cancer and could it actually be missed if they have only been testing for uterine cancer ? Would it be noticed during internal check/ hystoscopy and sonogram?

Thankyou for reading

  • Hi Poppy2024,

I can completely understand why you are feeling concerned especially as you are experiencing all this bleeding. I am not sure myself what the bleeding and discomfort might be but it might be worth getting in touch with your GP and asking these questions so that they can advise you and reassure you.

Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call and talk things through with them as they may be able to help with your questions or point you in the right direction.

I hope that you will also hear from other members of our community who have had similar issues before and that they will drop by shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
