I have been told I need a mammogram due to pain in my breast and a lump

I’m absolutely unbelievably worried. About a week or two ago I noticed a lump in my breast, the more I prodded it the more painful it became. Then I had a GP appointment and they said I need a mammogram which is Friday afternoon this week. I’m so scared and I’m very confused about it all, people often say breast cancer symptoms aren’t generally pain but some say it is painful. I currently just have a solid hard pea sized lump and swelling alongside pain and this breathlessness feeling. I have had this odd pain in chest/ribs feeling for around a year or two. I’m mostly just anxious as I’ve only just got out of homelessness and began my education again. I’m 25 and have no children. God bless and sorry for just rambling I can’t keep all this in as I’m feeling sick with worry!

  • Hello Saffyduck99

I'm sorry to hear that you recently found a breast lump. You did exactly the right thing in seeing your GP and it's good to hear that they've already arranged some further investigations for you.

It may help to keep in mind that the majority of women who are referred to a specialist breast care clinic are not diagnosed with cancer.

It's possible that you may not get answers at your appointment later today but hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for some answers and reassurance.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses at any point you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
