My dad is 54 and I think he’s got bladder cancer - Advice please?

Hi,

my dad has recently been hospitalised after initially being treated at the GP for a severe UTI. He is urinatint as he describes what looks like red wine, along with a lot of blood clots and snotty mucus?

The doctors first did a CT scan and thought his bladder and bowel had attached to eachother and his bowel had a hole that was leaking and causing this mucus, but after going into surgery to originally fit a stoma they have now found a mass in his bladder which they have sent biopsy’s off for. Of course I have been googling and it seems its very rare for a mass to be growing in the bladder and it not be cancerous.

they have also have fitted tubes in his kidneys to drain them as they were functioning at only 50% when they fitted these mucus also drained from the kidneys.

he has needed several blood transfusions aswell as his iron is so low.

can anybody advise? Does this sound similar to any cases you’ve known that has turned out to be the worst?

thanks in advance.

  • Hi Charly,

Your poor dad - it sounds rather unpleasant  and I am so sorry to hear that they have found a mass in his bladder as well as having to drain his kidneys which were not functioning properly. It sounds like he has had a rather difficult time with him needing blood transfusions as well. It's normal to be worried about bladder cancer and I can completely understand why you would suspect that but you won't know for sure really what this might be until you have received the results of his biopsies and all his tests. It's hard to resist the temptation to Google but it's best if you can to try and keep well away from Google or it will only make you worry even more without ever having any certainty of clarity.

It's hard to know really for sure what your dad's diagnosis might be but I just wanted you to know we are thinking of you and keeping everything crossed. I hope that you find out more very soon and that you will in the meantime hear from the experiences of others here on Cancer Chat who have been through something similar or have known cases like this one. Every experience is unique and different but it does help to talk to others who have been in the same boat.

Waiting for important news like a diagnosis is never easy and I thought I would share with you these helpful tips to help you cope during this anxious time.

    Best wishes,
