Ovarian cyst or ovarian cancer?

I'm writing here in hopes to connect with someone whose been through a similar experience as I'm feeling very lost.

A quick background: in 2021 I was prescribed HRT at the age of 40.  Then, a couple of years on, in 2023, I was experiencing bloating and discomfort and after my GP referred me for an ultrasound, which revealed a small ovarian cyst and the beginnings of fibroids.  They said they'd do a follow up scan after 6 months but never did.  Due to this I was taken off HRT and the symptoms calmed down.

I am now really concerned because since December 2024 I have had bloating and discomfort again, but this time around I feel far worse. I also have had discharge daily (odourless), lower back pain which, by the end of the day travels up to my kidney area (I believe its called flank pain) My bowel movements switch between diarrhea and constipation (and nothing in between).  I finally saw my GP Monday 30th December and she did a vaginal swab - no signs of candida/yeast infection.  On examination with a speculum, she found a polyp on the outside of my cervix, but said it looked quite normal and that she was more concerned about what is going on internally.  I've had full bloods taken looking for inflammation markers or infection, which are due back tomorrow.  I've been referred to the colposcopy for the polyp and for an urgent ultrasound scan (I still don't have a date)

I feel very unwell today, queasy, bloated and more diarrhea, but what is unnerving me is the pressure and discomfort in my lower abdomen the past few days.  Its making me feel like my bladder is full.  I'm concerned this is more than another cyst or fibroids.  I haven't had a period since July, but because of peri-menopause, this isn't unusual for me.  If anyone has had a similar experience or symptoms I'd like to hear from you.

Thanks for reading and I hope to hear back.

  • Thanks Steph

I have a date for my ultrasound scan next week and await a date for the colposcopy clinic appointment too.

  • I'm just updating this thread (I notice not everyone gives a conclusion to what they post for some reason?)

I went to hospital today and as I hadn't drank enough water for a pelvic ultrasound scan, they gave me a transvaginal scan instead. They obviously saw the cervical polyp and asked if I was being seen for that. I still await my colposcopy appointment.

The scan showed more fibroids, a cyst in the same place as two years ago (left ovary) and a small nodule on my right ovary. They said all small and nothing suspicious. So I guess I'll have to just put up with the discomfort.

So hopefully this colposcopy appointment will happen soon and they'll remove the cervical polyp. I'll update with any more news (in case folk come to the thread with the same issues down the line). Wish me luck!
