Scans and more scans

merry christmas everyone!! i hope you're all having a lovely day so far  .

i, unfortunately, had some rather bad news yesterday, so im not really in a festive mood

this time last year, i was referred to haematology for some nodes in my neck and b symptoms. the ct and ultrasounds i had showed "bilateral level 2 lymph nodes", but were deemed likely reactive for someone my age. my haematologist decided that he'd see me again this december just to follow up regardless

since then; i've had numerous more nodes pop up, and the other symptoms have only gotten worse. i saw him again three weeks ago and he was understandably concerned, so sent me for some bloods such as a flow cytometry and another urgent ct scan of my head and neck, as id had some appear behind my ear too

coincidentally, i had an mri brain and spine booked for three days later at a different hospital for neurology as they suspected something like MS. i was told it'd be about 4 weeks for the mri results as they were non urgent, and that id see my neurologist in april next year as planned

fast forward to yesterday, and i receive a results letter on my phone from my neurologist. the mri was urgently reviewed the day after my scan due to multiple bilateral level 2 cervical lymph nodes, and a non specific high intensity area in the right nasopharynx.

the neurologist compared the results of this scan and the ct done by my haematologist last year, and has urgently referred me to ent for a head and neck specialist MDT to discuss likely cancer

this wasn't the outcome i expected at all. i've had a nasoendoscope recently due to difficulty swallowing, but the consultant put the scope through the other side of my nose, so it was likely missed.

i don't really know how to feel, the neurologist has likely said ill need biopsies and a secondary scan, but to get this news on christmas eve really sucked

sorry to vent everyone, i just needed to get it off my chest! i hope you all have a great day x

  • Hello Fleur123

I'm sorry to hear the news that you had earlier this week. I can understand that this perhaps came as a shock and certainly that it wasn't what you wanted to hear. It's good to know that your neurologist has already made an urgent request for you to be seen by the ENT team and hopefully, between the ENT specialists and the haematology consultant, they will be able to make a swift diagnosis and discuss the next steps with you.

If you think it would be helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses before your next hospital appointment then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays). I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Keep in touch Fleur123 and let us know how you get on.

    Sending my best wishes,
