Ovarian cancer/endometrioma very worried

I don’t really know where else to put this, it’s so close to Christmas and I feel so anxious.

I have been having ongoing pelvic pain and period issues for the last 2 and a half years, since I was 18.  I was told I had a 5 cm cyst on my ovary in July via ultrasound, Rescan in August and it was hemorrhagic, same size. I had an internal scan today (December), and it’s now 7 cm, and the technician said she thinks it’s an endometrioma and I shouldn’t worry and I should be looking at being diagnosed with endometriosis.

I worry about my health a lot, it’s been a difficult couple of years with constantly changing symptoms, pain is increasing, no answers, long wait lists. It’s hard to manage it all whilst being in my final year of university too. Can they tell the difference between cancer and an endometrioma on a scan? There’s no body I can talk to about this because it’s Christmas tomorrow and I’m just so worried things won’t be taken seriously because of my age.

The only other symptoms I’ve had apart from pain In pelvis and back, with pressure feeling, is losing weight, but it goes up and down a lot, I was diagnosed with IBS in June (no camera, just based on symptoms). But when I get stressed I don’t really eat, and because I’m trying to eat an anti-inflammatory diet, i don’t know if that’s making me lose weight. I also bleed in between periods a lot, but I’ve had this since I started puberty, so I don’t think it’s a concern. (I have no family history of ovarian or breast cancer).

Thank you for reading this :(, just any information about the difference between the two would be great.

  • Endometriosis is more common than gynae cancers but is also a horrible condition. About 1 in 10 women develop it which is significantly more common than either ovarian or endometrial cancer. I hope you get answers soon and I hope it's not cancer but I'm also sorry you are going through this at all. It's perfectly valid to be nervous but remember that lots of people get fast tracked to exclude cancer and that is exactly what happens.

I don't know about definitively excluding cancer from a scan. Might be worth posting this on the "ask the nurses" page or phoning to consult one as they have more knowledge and experience. Wishing you as good a Christmas as you can have when you're worrying x
