Suspected tongue/throat cancer

I had a routine cervical neck MRI on 31st Oct to check for nerve damage due to osteoarthritis, but when they did it, they found ‘enlarged postlingual lymphoid tissue with filling of both vallecula,’ (back of the tongue area I’ve been told) the report said although the appearance could be due to lymphoid hyperplasia, a referral to ENT is needed to rule out anything sinister.   The results took over 5 weeks to get to my GP, due to an oversight in the department, I was called me in so GP could examine me,  she couldn’t see anything but still referred me on the 2WW to ENT, that was 13 days ago and still I have no appointment, I’m contacting ENT direct tomorrow to see why,

I’m just curious as to if anyone has ever heard of or experienced this. My symptoms are slightly swollen lymph nodes all in my neck and they are uncomfortable, esp when I move my head, some jaw pain, that goes into my ear occasionally, and I’m always clearing my throat as if something is in it, my tongue feels too big for my mouth when it’s closed, and it catches on my teeth, no sores but a dry mouth feeling, I know I’m probably overthinking all this, but you can’t help but worry when you don’t know what’s happening, any replies would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Denise

  • Hello Denise

I'm sorry to hear about the situation you find yourself in. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about the findings of the MRI and the wait that you've had to see a specialist. I hope that you were able to get in touch with the hospital to ask about your referral and when you may be seen by the ENT team.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really difficult. Sometimes it can help to talk with someone about how you're feeling. If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available MOnday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (excluding bank holidays).

I hope that you have some news soon Denise. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thankyou, for your reply, I’ve finally had my appointment through, but sadly it’s 5 weeks from my referral date, so have another 3 weeks of what worrying what it could be,
