Cervical cancer

Hi all Please excuse my long descriptive query. I am 55yrs old no longer have a period and my last smear was stupidly ,  10 yrs ago (which I was adamant tt had been 5)the reason I had asked for a smear was due to being very sore and uncomfortable down below and whenever I strained to do a bowel movement I was seeing a tea stained smear when wiping my front . I had just returned from holiday with random blisters on one side of my face (lasted for 6 weeks )and assumed I had cross contaminated my own body Around one week later everything cleared up. 3 months went by when I received a letter to say I had high riisk HPV and abnormal cells I had a Colposcopy. On the 10 December and they removed the abnormal cells using the LOOP DIATHERMY procedure. Now I have been told the cells that were removed are cancerous The surgeon called to say I have to wait 6weeks then have an MRI scan and a meeting for plan of action. I am making myself ill with worry to the extent I’m actually physically sick waiting for more advanced symptoms and can’t stop crying. Has anyone experienced this and had a positive outcome? I don’t know what to expect and if this is curable or treatable I’m all over the place Sorry for such a long post x

  • Welcome to the forum JakeT1 although I'm so sorry for the stress and worry this is causing.

Finding out the cells were cancerous must have been very upsetting but the good thing is that they've been removed. I know that doesn't take the worry away, and that the next 6 weeks are going to be very tough, but the Cancer Chat community are here for you JakeT1 and hopefully some of our members will stop by soon to offer share their experiences and advice.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines will be open between 9a.m - 5p.m, Monday - Friday, except today and the remaining bank holidays. They are very insightful and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

We're thinking of you JakeT1 and sending all our support your way.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you for such kind words

  • I am so sorry for all your stress and worry. It is easy to say ‘try not to worry’ when we all do, it’s natural. Like the moderator said they have scraped the cells away so hopefully they have removed everything. I hope that the MRI is clear for you and that you get good news very soon so that you can start to try and relax. Thinking of you

  • Thank you for your kind words. My MRI came back clear however I’ve been strongly advised by the doctor to go through with a radical hysterectomy due to the amount of cancer cells that were removed also because I’m 55yrs. I’m going to take this advice as I feel I’ve been totally blessed with the fact it’s not spread beyond the cervix. Thank you once again for having me in your thoughts

  • Thank you for your kind words. My MRI results came back clear however I’ve been strongly advised by the doctor to go through with a radical hysterectomy due to the amount of cancer cells that were removed and I’m also 55yrs. I’ve decided to take her advice on this as I feel I’ve been totally blessed with the fact that the cancer has not spread beyond the cervix. Thank you once again for giving me a thought

  • I am so pleased for you that the MRI came back clear. I don’t blame you for having the hysterectomy - if I am in the same position I would do exactly the same - I am 51 and otherwise I think I would just be worrying constantly. Good luck to you and I hope for a speedy recovery for you after the operation. Take care of yourself. Xx

  • Do you know anyone who has had a radical hysterectomy with open surgery and regretted it. I’m hearing all sorts of horrible stories (not on here) and it’s putting the fear into me. Have you had surgery? X

  • I am sorry i don’t know of anyone - perhaps you could ask the hospital or surgeon where you would be having it for their records on outcomes of the operation - the amount of these radical hysterectomies that the surgeon has done and over how long - I suppose a lot of the women’s experiences depend on the surgeon performing it and their own health? I have put so much weight on during the menopause I was always so slim with a flat belly now I have a huge stomach and my BMI is high - when this journey started I have tried with all my might to lose weight so that if I have a hysterectomy then I won’t put myself at further risk. It’s going slowly but really trying. Can I ask - did you have any pains like sharp pains where your ovaries are and uterus? Sharp and achy pains? Did you have heavy bleeding with clots at any point? I hope that you get answers regarding the effects of the hysterectomy

  • I’m sorry your going through this, try and stay positive which I know can be difficult especially when you don’t have answers.

I was more uncomfortable down below as to sharp pains I knew it wasn’t thrush or a urine infection but very uncomfortable. I had dark smears when wiping the front after each bowel movement which would then continue to happen that entire day whenever I urinated,  hence all this , encouraged me to go ask for a smear test.
I’ve not had a period for 14yr and never been on HRT Eventually after a few weeks these symptoms went away on there own.

Have you had your smear results yet as these will tell you if you have abnormal cells which I believe is caused by menopause and very common. If this is the case you should be sent for a Colposcoply which examines the cervix to get them removed so they can send them to the lab which then tests for cancer. Lots of bleeding and clots doesn’t necessarily mean the worst. If the pains are really bad make sure your being persistent with the doctor just keep going back to him everyday if need be this may help you to get the attention you deserve.

The positive thing is you’ve had a Hystoscopy which has clarified your uterus is fine and your last smear was only 5yr ago. I hope you get answers soon so you can get rid of some stress. Good luck x
