Second opinion on lesion

Hi,

on the 1st December I noticed a mole had turned Black and was slightly raised (I can’t be 100% sure if it was a mole or new lesion).
I sent an e-consult form to my GP with a photograph of the mole. I was asked to attend an appointment. The GP examined the mole and took some photographs using Telederm technology. The photos were reviewed by a Dermatologist and I was then referred for an urgent appointment with a Dermatologist for suspected skin cancer.

I attended the appointment today, I was literally in for a minute. The Dermatologist took a 1 second look at the mole and told me it was a blood blister. I wasn’t asked any questions and I was quickly discharged.
Blood blisters are Red and clear up on their own within 2 weeks. My apparent blood blister started off Black with crust and has continued to grow and change in colour and is showing no signs of fading.

I’m not convinced that it is a blood blister so have since sent another e-consult to my GP explaining my experience and have attached images showing how the mole has changed.

Am I right in asking for a second opinion? Thanks

  • Hello Mandyc1 and welcome to the forum.

Asking for a second opinion is perfectly valid, especially if you are seeking reassurance about your symptoms and are feeling unsatisfied with the outcome of your appointment.

I'm sure some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their thoughts and advice with you soon, but if you'd like to discuss this further with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m, except Christmas Eve and the remaining Bank Holidays this year.

I hope you won't have to wait too long for another referral and that you're able to get some much needed peace of mind the second time around.

    Kind regards,

  • My partner's "cyst" according to dermatology was in transit melanoma. They do get things wrong sometimes so absolutely valid to pursue a second opinion x

  • As Steph says, you are well within your rights to ask for a second opinion & I know several people who have done the same. It's rare that they get it wrong but it can happen, so certainly push to be seen by another dermatologist.
