FIT test 52.2 and low iron levels in recent blood test (Ferritin 23?)

Hi all.

I posted in the introduction forum about this but see the correct place is here.

Always suffered with IBS and later confirmed diverticular disease, however after retiring in early 2023 my tummy was much better.

Diagnosed with blood clots in the lungs December 23, probably from covid and put on blood thinners.

Anyway, blood test in May was clear full.

Started to get odd all over itch and feeling washed out by early afternoon so asked for further blood tests.

The one my doctor was concerned about was Serum Ferritin Level 23 ug/L Outside Range Reference Range: 30.0 - 275.0.

She prescribed iron tablets which I can not take as they cause massive stomach issues. However at the same time she gave me a FIT test kit.

The results came back Friday 13th! as 52.2 with a urgent two week suspect cancer referral request. My world fell apart.

I'm seeing my GP Monday and assume the referral will be made then.

I'm away over Christmas so hope they can get me in just after.

I have been going over and over everything and its doing mine and my wife's head in.

I have had for decades an actively bleeding pile just inside the exit of the tail pipe. It usually bleeds after constipation or stress but a short few days of Anusol fixes it for a very long time, sometimes months.

It had been active due to the iron pills causing constipation the day before I did the FIT test! I could not see blood then but I wonder if this could have slewed the results?

Then of course there is the diverticular that has been grumbling recently due to poor food choices in the festive season.

All good reasons to be hopeful that I don't have cancer after losing my first wife and mum to it in short order.

But then I keep coming back to the low iron and does that tell us there is something more serious wrong?

I'll know more tomorrow of course, but this is all terrifying me.

I'll have the test but that scares the hell out of me not only for what they might find but the process itself and any damage it might cause (I'm built with very narrow tubing)

I also have a pathological fear of hospitals.

Anyway, don'[t know why I'm saying all this there seems only one course of action.

I assume unless they offer something next week I won't be seen as stupid for putting things off until after Christmas, I need it for my mental wellbeing and if there is anything terrible then,, well I'd like to have this one in peace?

Thanks for listening.

  • Further update. Had a call from a consultant today. Very nice chap who took my history. Based on that he felt my likelihood of having cancer were low but the only way to find out is via the colonoscopy which he is putting me forward for. We discussed a further FIT test and while he would have done it, his advice was I should have the procedure. I'm wondering what sort of anemia levels people were seeing that then went on to have a positive test for cancer? My ferittin was 23 for example? Scared as hell just now but at least it looks like I'll get Christmas

  • Hi Mike

I hope the colonoscopy goes well and you get good news.

I'm also terrified. Been given the same sort of referral. FIT test says >200, which i think I understand is over the normal range, but not cra,y high? I've had other issues in the past that cause a little bleeding so I'm hoping it's just that.

I've been referred as I've also had a big increase in bowel movement. I'm hoping and praying that is an allergy/intolerance or another condition. Past 2 days I've completely simplified my diet and cut out all gluten and dairy, and today I've only needed to go 3 times, so maybe that?

I'm terrified as the dr has mentioned cancer as a real possibility.

Really hoping for good news for us both.

If any more expert posters can share advice, please do!

  • Oh James, my very best to you. Stay hopeful

  • Update 21 December. My anxiety and nerves are in tatters. Been trying to be brave and hopeful but things are happening that make me worry more and that in turn properly makes more symptoms that worry me. So the start of this I was feeling fine, only went to doctors due itchy skin, that's gone now. 23u iron. Last night I was woken by horrible low tummy pain, just like when I first had a diverticulitis attack in 2016. Eventually after sitting downstairs for a few hours it subsided enough to sleep. Pain had gone but it felt tender when I got up. Pretty normal bowel movements and nothing of concern to be seen, certainly no blood. Went out with the wife to a garden centre and before long was feeling a bit light headed and tired. Most odd. So here I am now convinced there is cancer and it's going mad inside me. Honestly this is terrible.

  • Update after colonoscopy. Pleased to say other than extensive diverticular disease throughout, one 2cm polyp was removed with the consultant stating it looked completely benign. Obviously been sent to the lab but no signs of cancer. Procedure was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting, had sedation. The worst part was the god awful bowel prep. Good luck to everyone else

  • Morning Mike

I'm.so happy for you. That is wonderful news to start the day. I hope the can continue to help you manage the diverticular.

I am going for my colonoscopy this morning. Feel pretty rubbish from the bowel prep, but moreover I am absolutely terrified about it all. The procedure, any complications (I also have a heavy cold, so not helping on the dehydration) and mostly what they find.

Hoping and praying to post back here with good news.

    Take care, Mike. God Bless.

  • Morning James, the bowel prep is the worst of it. Are you having sedation? The procedure was uncomfortable a couple of times but nothing dramatic. Totally understand how you are feeling.

Be sure to write down any relevant medical observations or concerns. The nurse that books you in will take note and pass to the team doing it.

Best of luck, praying for a good outcome for you.

  • Thank you Mike

Awaiting debrief with the Dr. Procedure wasn't too bad.

But they found something and now I am even more scared.

  • Very best of luck, let us know if you want to

  • Hi Mike

I'll post more in the thread i started. Not great news, I'm afraid. But a plan coming together
