Throbbing in breast and 'insect bite' looking mark (IBC?)

Hello. Please forgive me for joining and then posting immediately. I've been in a whirlwind these last 12 hours or so and I've gotten myself into a right state.

So I'm 41 just turned. No history in my family to speak of, other than precancerous cells (cervix) - mum, and various non-cancerous breast lumps - aunt.

So around a month ago I woke up with what looked like an insect bite on my right breast. Very odd. Red/white and puffy like a little mosquito bite. Didn't think too much of it.

I stupidly have never really checked my breasts, but I decided to after this. I swore blind I could feel a tiny lump deep within the tissue. I also had some throbbing in that breast. I ummed and ahhed about it for days and then, convinced by my partner, saw a GP.

GP examined me and said she couldn't feel or see (the mark was long gone by this point) anything concerning. She gave me 2 options - monitor it myself and come back if anything changes etc. or come back and see her in a month to check it again. This made me feel very relieved and confident all was ok.

Despite throbbing every day, I'd pretty much put it to the back of my mind. Until last night. I was in the shower and looked down and noticed a red mark, exactly like an insect bite, in the exact same spot.

I did the stupidest thing and started googling and came across inflammatory breast cancer and I've got myself into such a panic I feel like my life is flashing before me.

I don't appear to have any other symptoms other than a near persistent throb and this insect bite looking mark which disappeared within 24 hours the first time, has now returned, and is currently still there but has gone down slightly. I think my nipples looks the same. The skin I'm not sure whether I'm over analysing and can't tell if the texture looks different. I don't think it feels different.

I'm shaking like a leaf after reading about IBC and my appointment with the GP is on Wednesday but of course it's Christmas next week.

I'm sorry I'm not sure why I posted here.

Previous history - none to speak of. But in August or September I had sinus issues and at the same time got a painful lump in my right armpit (woke up with pain and then felt the lump). GP tested me for scarlet fever but it was negative and it went back down again straight away so they said it was likely another virus.

  • Hi girlinabox,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of your worries, I know it's never easy dealing with uncertainty.

It's good to hear that you've spoken to your GP about this, and it sounds like you have another appointment coming up this week. Make a note of anything that you have noticed, and the timeline since first noticing something, so that you can talk this all through with the doctor.

They are of course best placed to advise and if there are any concerns or further investigations they'd like to do, then they will issue a referral.

I hope that it all goes OK on Wednesday, and do be sure to ask any questions you have.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
