Blood from nipple - very worried

Hi all

A couple of days ago I was undressing and found a penny sized tinted red stain in my bra. I squeezed my nipple and orange liquid came out followed by blood.

Doctor felt no lumps during examination but I’ve been referred with the two week wait to the breast clinic. I’m beside myself with worry that I’ve booked myself in privately in the hope I can get answers quicker.

I guess my point of this post is to hear others stories and outcomes as my mind is in a very dark place right now. I’m not eating or sleeping my anxiety has all consuming control.

Thankyou xx

  • Welcome to the forum Peachy1 although I'm sorry to hear what happened when you squeezed your nipple.

I know this must be a very scary and worrying time, but if you can, try not to think the worst or jump to any conclusions until you know more. Much easier said than done I know, but I hope it helps to know that many of our members have been in a similar position, so you are not alone Peachy1, and I'm sure some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

This period of limbo and uncertainty is never easy but I hope this information provided on the NHS website for managing anxiety will help to steady your nerves and get your mind out of that dark place whilst you wait.

We're here for you Peachy1 and wishing you all the best with your referral in two weeks time.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph

thank you so much for your reply. An update on my appointment. An ultrasound found nothing of concern even though there were a few dots of the bloody discharge as she scanned. My mammogram came back fine too. I did have a slight tender patch next to my nipple after the initial discharge but that’s it! That’s since gone.

The initial discharge episode was 12 days ago. Since I’ve only had small dots of remaining blood. It’s now turning brown. If I’m warm or push near my nipple it seems to appear.

My mind just won’t rest I do suffer from bad anxiety and have started sertraline. I have read some go on to receive a diagnosis later on after these types of episodes. You’d think after a clear mammo and ultrasound anyone would be relieved. I think I’d of felt more at ease if she could have said it’s ‘this specific’ condition instead of knowing nothing.

Im going back in 6 weeks to check on what the nipple is doing. Not sure the point of my long message but maybe getting it out will help my mental state.

I had the same and it turned out to be a blocked milk duct.   A very quick op to clear it was successful. Like you I was terrified it was serious. Hope this helps

Thank you for replying   that’s reassuring. Did the problem just continue until you removed the duct?

Yes.  It was only a tiny amount every day.    I was told to keep a diary for 3 months but I didn’t as it didn’t change.   That was when they decided to operate.   No problem since.   Was around 7 years ago
