Tried a wedge pillow I don’t eat or drink after 6pm and I am on omeprazole and famotidine but still suffer anyone else got any tips I can try to ease the burn which wakes me up I’m worried if it continues I will damage the oesophagus again but have limited treatment options !

  • Hello Bigbloke,

Reflux is listed on our website as one of the possible problems after surgery for oesophageal cancer and it is suggested on our page that you get "antacids or medicines that help to move food through the stomach and bowel" which you seem to have been doing with the Omeprazole and Famotidine and you also did the right thing in trying this wedge pillow and in not eating or drinking after 6pm. As you are still suffering quite a lot from reflux despite all the measures and treatments you are taking, I would get in touch with your medical team and express your concerns that you will damage the oesophagus and simply that it is causing you significant discomfort. Perhaps they have other types of treatment or medication to suggest you try.

I am sure there are other members of our community who have experienced reflux after the oesophagectomy and they may have good tips for you based on their experience, on what worked for them to reduce the severity of these reflux symptoms.

You are also welcome to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they may have some good suggestions for you or helpful advice on this.

I hope that this unpleasant reflux improves soon and that you are recovering well from the surgery.

    Best wishes,
