Subungual Melanoma

Hi,

I’ve got a large brown misshaped mark under my big toe nail. I’d obviously used google and saw subungual melanoma was a possibility and contacted the GP four weeks ago who got me to send them a photo. They then referred me to dermatology.and a few days ago I saw a letter from them had been uploaded to my NHS app. The letter from them to the GP states ‘query subungual melanoma’ and seeing those words has really freaked me out. I’m already going through a really bad patch with anxiety and this is feeling a bit overwhelming. I have an appointment with dermatology on Wednesday and am so very grateful to be seen quickly. I think I’d noticed the mark appear about three months ago now. No trauma to the nail or anything before that. It’s not a stripe, more of a blob. I think if they hadn’t put SM in the letter and had just said the appointment was to investigate further then I might not be feeling as anxious (though SM was already in my mind). Has anyone had a biopsy done for this, do they go through the nail or do they need to take the nail off? Anyone been diagnosed and might be able to share their experience and treatment please? Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help / share. Take care all

  • Hi zvc11,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It's good to hear you haven't had to wait long for the appointment - I hope it goes OK on Wednesday.

There are different options with regards to having the biopsy, so it's difficult to say exactly what they will do.

You may find it helpful to have a search of this forum (using the bar at the top of the page) for other relevant discussions, information, and people to connect with.

Otherwise, hopefully you'll get some more replies to your post here soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
