Thick Endometrial lining with mirena coil

Hi all,

I am 44, and have had the mirena coil in place for a year now, and have recently had an ultrasound due to irregular bleeding. This wasn't constant, sometimes I would have a full bleed fro a couple of hours, other times, it would be spotting or blood tinged discharge. Had an ultrasound, transvaginal, last Wednesday (26/07), and today (2/12) have had the Dr's book an appointment to discuss the results.

The ultrasound report states that 'uterine body measures 10.8mm in AP diameter and contains vascularity. Vascularity also noted within the cervical cavity'. Obviously a little concerned, especially as having the coil in place should have thinned out the lining. I've got a few days before speaking to my docs, but just wondered if anyone has been in the same situation?

    I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms and for the worry they're causing but I'm glad you'll be having an appointment soon to discuss your test results.

    Hi Shivanon,

    I've got the same symptoms as you.  My coil was meant to thin the lining out, but at the scan yesterday it was 10.8mm and contains vascularity. No polyps found. I've been bleeding daily since they put the coil in 6 months ago, not heavy bleeding, just consistent. It gets heaver if I exercise or over do it a little. I know it's been some months since you posted, but I was just wondering how you are? Did your doctor offer any other treatments?

    Hi LIssy,

    Yes I had the hysteroscopy and a biopsy was taken, with no abnormalities found, although I was haemmorrhagic. I had the coil removed and a new one put in, this was the first week of December. Since then, I have had a little spotting, but no more bleeding daily and haven't had a period for 2 months now, so far so good!

    that's wonderful news!! thank you so much for responding so quickly. Hopefully I will have a similar outcome. This daily bleeding is just so draining, I feel exhausted all the time. I had so much pain when they put the coil in the first time, for the hours following it I felt like I was in labour. I think if they offer me another hysteroscopy I will ask for pain relief. I'm so pleased for you xx

    It was a relief, and to be honest, the hysteroscopy was nowhere near as bad as I thought. I had a local, so no feeling in the area, didn't feel the coil being removed or reinserted, like you , the first time I had it put in was horrific, I almost passed out! i know there is a long wait for Gynae, but hopefully they can get you in soon. He did say that if it happens again, I could have ablation, but so far so good! I hope you get an appointment soon! xxx
