Repeat FIT test?

Hi all, went to see Docs because of some lower back pain and had to take a FIT test. When I did the test I was on Anti Biotics for a suspected UTI (I get them due to Type2 DB tablets.

was not UTI but carried on taking them as was told must finish course.

had bad upset tummy as always with ABs, and did the fit test despite poo being rather soft etc.

Nit heard from Doctors at all despite my FIT test appearing in my NHS App, the result was 16.2.

my question is, can I request to take the FIT test again now my toilet stuff is back to normal?

I will obviously have a Colonoscopy if I am over the cutoff point again, but just feel I want to do a retest.

surely the GP should be calling me? Result was out in App at 5:30 on as Friday evening!!!

  • Welcome to the forum, Thatguy999.
It sounds like you’ve been through a lot recently, and it’s natural to have questions about your FIT test and what happens next.
From what you’ve shared, the antibiotics and upset stomach might have added to your concerns about whether the result truly reflects your usual health. While I can’t provide medical advice, the FIT test is typically used to detect traces of blood in the stool, and a result like yours would often prompt further investigation, usually starting with a discussion with your GP about the next steps.
If you feel your test result may not be representative because of your recent health issues, it’s reasonable to contact your GP. They can help determine whether a repeat FIT test might be suitable or whether it’s better to proceed with further investigations.
Regarding your GP not reaching out yet, it could simply be due to timing or administrative delays. It might be worth giving the practice a call to discuss your results and get clarity on the next steps since they’ll be best placed to guide you.
If you’d like to ask general questions or seek additional support, you can also contact our team of nurses. They’re available at 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
Take care, and let us know how you get on.

  • Hey, thanks for that. We have agreed to do a second test before I go forward with next steps.

  • I think that's a good idea considering 16 is a very low score ,10 being the cut off point for being normal and it goes up into the hundreds .

  • There is a little bit more to this, as I was actually quite annoyed a Doctor had put the result in my notes and added (Patient Informed) to the note at 17:48 on Friday evening. I still had not had a call by the end of Monday so I emailed the Practice Manager a polite email suggesting that I should have been called first.

The reply I got was quite short and terse, "You will be called on Wednesday morning by a Clinician"  (No name on the email, assumed it was practice Manager as it came from his email address)

On Wed morning a paramedic from the practice called and clearly knew nothing about the lead up to this, and when I said I wanted to repeat the test please (I saw articles online on BowelCancer.org saying it was a good idea generally), she said it's probably best to have the Colonoscopy as you did have blood on the tissue.........erm.....I have never once had blood on a tissue........she seemed shocked, as the Doctor that put the entry saying I had......no idea where this came from.

She then went on to say well you have been getting migraines.....not had one for over 20 years, although I do recall briefly mentioning them during the consult.....anyway the paramedic was great and went off to speak to the Dr. I then got an email from the practice Manager  (he signed this one!), and he is raising this whole episode in the next clinical meeting.......also got a non apology, apology ("I am really sorry you are not happy with the service"), hate those to be honest......

I genuinely don't think I have got BC, but will do the new FIT test again and see where it takes me.

  • Crikey things aren't what they used to be ,one doesn't seem to know what the other ones doing ,Its quite worrying when they write things down about you that aren't true it makes you think have they got the right notes for me ,that was definitely not an apology lol ,well here's hoping your next test is normal range and then see where you go from there .
