Does anyone understand FIT test results please?

Hi, I've been bleeding from back passage on and off for months. The last colonoscopy I had was April last year. The result was not positive but I had raised inflammation. This time the FIT test has come back positive. Doctors letter quoted FIT (90) and FCP (1144)  They have said I need another colonoscopy which I'm waiting to hear.

Does anyone understand what the result means? Should I be worried (obviously I am worrying but currently don't understand the results)

Any advice welcomed, thank you

  • A fit test picks up small amounts of blood which cannot be detected by the eye which can mean many things good and bad , you will know more when you have your colonoscopy, i had a fit test of 168

Thank you , I'll wait until colonoscopy

  • I would say 90 is the result of your test not sure of the other number but 90 is the important one ,Ive just had one it was 51 ,so they say anything over 10 is classed as abnormal especially if you have other symptoms ,hence the Colonoscopy test ,mine turned out to be ok ,I hope your appointment comes soon to put your mind at rest .

  • Hi LMO and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to read that you are worried about your positive FIT test.

Any results above 10 is considered positive. However, the actual reading is irrelevant. With a positive FIT test (there is blood in the stool) you will have tests (ie colonoscopy) to find out the cause and to rule out bowel cancer.

As you are aware a positive FIT test does not necessarily mean you have cancer. There are many reasons for a positive FIT test such as Crohn’s disease, polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease.

I understand how anxious it can be to wait for test results. Anxiety UK offers useful tips and advice on how to cope while waiting.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.
