CEA level 500 - worried sick

Hi - had routine bloods done 2 weeks ago which showed CEA level 500. No symptoms, no pain, no weight loss, no bleeding, no anaemia. Doctor did physical pelvic examination and couldn’t find or feel anything obvious. Repeated bloods and CEA level has increased slightly. To get bowel screening and ovarian scan. I have had 2 routine National bowel screenings done since I was age 50. Both clear, I am now 54. Doctor doesn’t know what the problem is and didn’t offer any suggestions to put my mind at rest (she’s never been great with communication tbh). I am worried sick at the 500 level as normal readings are around 3. Does this high reading suggest an advanced stage cancer even though I have no symptoms. I am so worried that I can’t sleep.

  • Hello Mozimo1223

I'm soryr to hear that you've recently had some abnormal blood test results and that you're now waiting for further investigations to see what may have caused these results.

A raised CEA result on its own does not automatically mean a cancer diagnosis so it's good to hear that your Dr has already referred you for some further testing. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for answers and reassurance.

In the meantime, I wonder if you'd find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope you have some news soon Mozimo1223. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello, thank you for this. I am just so worried because the CEA number is so high (usually 3). No one has explained the relevance of the number and any information I have found myself all points towards advanced malignant cancer. I am so so worried.
