Mammogram results

Hi, my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. Had tumour removed and chemo/radiotherapy. Has had yearly mammograms since. She had one last week and today received a letter saying she has a telephone call with the breast clinic doctor in 3 weeks.

I'm trying to reassure her that it could be nothing and surely anything more wouldn't be over the phone?

Does anyone have any experience of this or what it could mean?

Thanks x

  • Hi Twotothreexx,

It may be that as she is reaching the five year period, she will be discharged from the breast clinic back to her GP and her Doctor is giving one final appointment? I think this varies by region, but I have five years under mine, where I have an annual review with a consultant, followed by a mammogram. Once discharged from the clinic, I will just have the yearly mammograms and if anything is then flagged up my file would be reopened, otherwise I would need to be re-referred by my GP if any other symptoms required investigating in between. There's no point keeping people under the clinic for years if they're getting by okay, and thankfully it sounds like your mum has been doing well.

I hope this is the case for your mum, and I'm not sure how her clinic operates (some don't do yearly reviews/some keep people on for longer), however, if anything is found on a mammogram that looks uncertain, I would have thought the radiology department would likely call her directly to book an appointment for further testing/biopsy to see what they're dealing with, not a breast clinic doctor.

    All the best.
