2ww urgent referral advice

Hi, I am new to the chat.

I attended my GP practice on Wednesday for a smear - I think I may be delayed by about 6-9 months so over 5 years since last one. Have attended all of them since first asked to attend and always been a normal result.

The GP said I have a polyp/lesion and asked long I have had it for. I’m not sure as it feels like a small cut (no bleeding) and don’t feel it all the time. Occasional sting if I have done the toilet. I am generally good at getting things checked but thought this was nothing and I’m terrified now. I’ve been referred as she is suspicious of this polyp being cancer. She said it’s round/smooth but didn’t say size (don’t think tiny and not sure what I’m looking for when we checked).

Anyone been in similar and it turned out ok?

thank you

  • Hello lmurray124,

It's normal to feel a bit anxious and to worry that this was not picked up before but the important thing is that it is being checked now and that you have had an urgent referral so that it can be looked into quickly. Having a 2 week referral doesn't mean it is necessarily cancer as there are many other things it could be instead but it means this will be looked into very soon which is a good thing. Waiting for results and a diagnosis is not easy and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope during this time of uncertainty.

I hope that you will hear from others here who have been in a similar position and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that it will all turn out nothing of concern and that they will deal with the polyp quickly and efficiently.

    Best wishes,
