My colonoscopy experience

Just came here to say I’d read this thread prior to having a colonoscopy. I’d been having symptoms of blood in poo, went drs and had fit test score over 400

as you can imagine been fearing the worst and very nervous of the colonoscopy and what will be found

I had the procedure last Sunday - the Saturday I started the laxatives, mine was beginning with p can’t remember the name of it but had to do one sachet at 5pm - was very thick and tasted salty but tbh if you have a mouthful of that and then a big sip of squash you get through it, the second dose at 9pm was way easier not as thick in my opinion . I assumed I’d be up all night  with tummy trouble but I wasn’t I slept from midnight right through to 7am

the procedure was way easier than I imagined, they gave me sedative and fentanyl and gas and air, there was a moment where they put the air in that was uncomfortable almost like period cramp but soon went after a few puffs of the gas and air - personally I’d not suggest going without the pain relief and gas and air but with it it was practically pain free

after they gave my results - I’m still waiting for total confirmation that there is no cancer but what they are treating me for is ulcerative colitis

given the high fit test score I’ve honestly been expecting the worst and the anxiety over the colonoscopy was horrendous but honestly hand on heart it’s not that bad at all

  • Hello Mandyp84,

Thank you so much for taking the time to come here and share your colonoscopy experience. I am keeping everything crossed that you get confirmation soon that there is no cancer but it sounds like nothing of concern was flagged. You must be so relieved it is over and I am glad that the experience was not too bad for you and that the sedative made things easier for you. I am sure other members of our community will find it reassuring and comforting to read your words as many on here will also be getting ready for their colonoscopy and feeling as anxious about it as you were.

    Best wishes,
