Worried I have bowel cancer like my mum

Hi,

Wasn't going to post but there are many of you in the same position as me and know what I'm going through.

I've been getting stomach pains for a while but recently my bowel habits have changed. My stool test came back 5 times the number it should be and a positive FIT test. I've always struggled with anemia so my iron is usually always low. I've recently been in hospital with meningitis so my body isn't in the best condition anyway but I'm so terrified I have bowel cancer. My mum had it in her 40's and sadly passed. I'm 31 and have always worried about having it. I have a colonoscopy next week on the 2ww referral. Are they just rushing me because of my mum or is there a genuine worrying have it.

Sorry for stressing and thank you for reading.

  • Hello Kkmumof2

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been so unwell and that on top of everything else, you're now waiting for further investigations under the 2ww pathway. It's perfectly understandable that you're feeling anxious, especially as you lost your Mum to cancer.

It's important to try and remember that there could be many reasons other than cancer for the symptoms that you've mentioned in your post. The important thing is that the health professionals have arranged your colonoscopy and hopefully, they will be in a position next week to give you some answers and reassurance.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult. It can sometimes help to talk with someone about how you're feeling. If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on next week Kk.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn. Thank you for your reply, it's really helpful. I'm starting to get my head around all the other possible things it could be and has put me slightly at ease. I have saved the number you sent and will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you!

Will update soon, with hopefully good news
