Possible melanoma

Hi,

I found a mole on my toe (in a hidden place) back in July. Was referred to hospital for photos and have had another appointment today. The doctor said she is going to refer me to get it removed. She didn't specifically say it was cancer but I'm now worried that it might be. Has anyone been through the process and what I can expect from the surgery? I kind of wish I had asked more questions at the time.

  • Hi,

They will remove it at a day surgery appointment & under local anaesthetic. The surgical wound will be larger than the mole so don't freak out about the size of the dressing. You will have a pre-surgery appointment before the surgery & they explain it in detail then. Because your foot is weight bearing you will be told how long to try & stay off that foot & to keep the foot elevated for the first few days to help healing.

Hopefully the biopsy results will come back clear. They always err on the side of caution with moles on the toes & soles of the foot but 75% of patients find the moles were benign or dysplastic (precancerous). I had a mole removed from the sole of my foot & it was benign.

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
