Biopsy

Hi all I'm just looking for some reassurance really

My husband has a suspicious mole removed 2 weeks ago now the dermatologist said its possibly melanoma in situ then the doctor said she thinks it may be a mole that's just playing up but I am petrified about this I'm so scared it's going to come back as melanoma and the waiting is terrible I'm constantly stressed about it my husband is fine and not worried at all but I'm constantly feeling anxious he received an appointment in the post for October when he asked what it was for she said it was a follow up from his original appointment and to discuss his results would that mean they are back? And also does it mean it's melanoma if it's a face to face appointment

Thank you

  • Hi,

Because it's taking longer than usual for results to come back from histology, many hospitals now send an appointment date out for several weeks ahead to give the results time to come back & be discussed, rather than wait for their return & then send the appointment out. If your husband's mole was only removed 2 weeks ago the results won't be back yet - the average wait is 4 to 6 weeks. A face to face appointment doesn't mean it's melanoma - most consultants prefer to see patients face to face to give results, check the wound and give future advice so don't panic that it's not a letter or phone call.

Only a biopsy can definitively say if the mole is cancerous but if it's caught early (In-situ/Stage 0) it can be treated successfully without any future problems.

Good luck and please let us know how he gets on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
