Shortie66 - gastric and GOJ biopsies taken during endoscopy

I think I've scared myself to be honest. Last week I had a camera down my throat in to my stomach and small intestine.  At the end of the procedure I was given information of biopsies, pictures etc taken.

I've just read a part that says 'gastric and GOJ biopsies taken'. Please could somebody explain this, and the other information on the sheet?

  • Hello jew96005136,

It's easy to scare ourselves when going through unpleasant procedures like having a camera down your throat and all the information you were given at the end of the procedure can be a bit overwhelming and I can completely understand that you feel the need to understand what this is all about.

I am not sure myself what this means but I hope that somebody who has had this mentioned to them before will come and tell you more based on their personal experiences. It helps to talk to others who have been through something similar during an endoscopy. Feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call as I am sure they will be happy to help you and guide you further: you can call them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Everything tightly crossed for you as you are waiting for these important results. I hope it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi jew

I had an endoscopy last year and had biopsies taken of a polyp in my stomach and also the junction between where your throat meets your stomach, it is very common for that area to be biopsied.  I was sure that it would come back as cancer as I have suffered from acid reflux for 15 years.  However, they came back as clear of any cancer.

It did take a couple of weeks for my biopsy results to come back to my gp, so you may want to ring your gp to see if you havent heard anything soon.

Best of luck and i hope that everything comes back clear.

    Annie

  • Yes it's standard procedure if there are any stomach polyps they have to do biopsies, I had mine done two weeks ago and there were three polyps in the stomach, also I had to have a ct scan as they found a bulge, so I'm bricking it at the moment, I'm sure you will  be fine polyps are quite common in the stomach and they can happen with long term ppi used as well, if you want to message me I'm here for you!
