DD referred to specialist

My DD has a swelling/ painful lump on her shoulder and after being admitted to hospital for 2 days we are now in limbo as she’s has all the tests (X-ray, mri, bloods and ultrasound ) and there is a few different possibilities for diagnosis but one of those possibilities is malignancy either bone or soft tissue. I’m struggling with the limbo as I know it’s been referred as a two week referral but we haven’t heard anything and it’s nearly a week since referral. As it’s the hospital that referred I don’t have a contact number to chase it up, and also should I even chase it yet it has only been 5 days. Thank you for listening

  • Hello Polly_golly76

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has recently been going through some investigations at the hospital and you're now waiting for an appointment with the specialist. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious at the moment.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be particularly difficult and it's natural to have questions and concerns. If you're worried about the waiting time for the referral that has been put in you can contact the hospital PALS team. It's part of their role to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS.

You might also find it helpful to chat things through with one of our nurses ahead of your daughter's appointment. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can along with helping you think about questions that you/she might want to ask the specialists. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you will have some news about the appointment soon and the specialists will be able to give you answers when you see them.

Keep in touch Polly_golly76 and let us know how she gets on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you, I did actually call yesterday and managed to get through to someone, a lovely nurse rang me this morning and told me what they think it is and although this isn’t confirmed yet (taking it bk to MDT again) they have put my mind at rest. It’s benign so we should be referred to our local hospital with a plan in due course. X
