MRI waiting time ovarian cancer confirmation

Hi,

I had an MRI yesterday and was told that I could be waiting up to a month for my results. Is this roughly the waiting time now? I know different areas vary, but if anyone on here lives in the Portsmouth area, I'd be interested to know how long people wait roughly. It seems an awful long time! Thanks in advance for any responses!

  • I'm in Bristol. Mine was back in four days. Hope you get yours soon xx

  • That was really quick! Hopefully I won't need to wait too long! I hope that your results were OK? Xx

  • Not MRI, but my CT scan results took about two weeks, in the Bournemouth area.

  • My practice use the Patient Access app and I was able to see the results before my consultant appointment (two weeks before). Not the best way to find out but at least I could process and move on with things.

There was more in the notes than the consultant told me so I was able to challenge her about other options for treatment.

I have to have a radical hysterectomy as I have an o-rads 5 growth of 4.1cm which they will then biopsy.  I am seeking a second opinion to see if they can biopsy first.

  • Hi Sam,

It really is a postcode lottery at the moment.
There’s been a National shortage of consultant radiologists for over ten years now AND it’s holiday season.
Routine scans usually take a month to be resulted - urgent ones less and emergency ones ought to be back in hours, rather than days.

It’s worth ringing your oncologist’s medical secretary, explaining that you’re naturally feeling anxious and ask if your appointment can be brought forward - maybe if someone else’s appointment is cancelled. As someone else has said, the report is often delivered to the consultant days in advance of your appointment.

    Good luck!
    Dave

  • Thank you, that's helpful. I will look on the app to check for updates. I agree, it's not the best way to find out but like you said, at least you could prepare yourself. I really hope that it all goes ok for you. It must be a worrying time for you. Please reach out if you need to. I'm here for you too x I am in a similar situation where they found a multiloculated cystic mass (complex cyst) on my left ovary. It measures approx 4cm with a solid component of approx 2cm going through it. Praying that it's good outcomes for both of us x Thank you for your kindness when you are going through a worrying time yourself x

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for your message. Maybe being told it will take a month is reassuring, but yes, it would be definitely worth seeing if I can try and get those results sooner! Thanks for the advice! Sam x
