I can’t bear the waiting

I had a routine colonoscopy and some irregular cells were picked up. A biopsy was taken and the findings are inconclusive. The consultant has decided to give me a biopsy under general anaesthetic plus MRI and CT scans. It seems that whatever this very small growth is it is located in my anus. I have no symptoms and I’m finding the whole process a terrible shock. I’m not sleeping and my day to day life has suddenly become a struggle. I have family and friends but don’t feel it’s fair on them to unburden myself. Yes, they know I’m worried but not to the extent that I am.

  • Hello Happyflower,

I am sorry to hear that irregular cells were picked up during a routine colonoscopy - what an anxious time it must be for you having to wait at the moment and being told that the findings of the biopsy are inconclusive. I hope that the biopsy under general anaesthetic as well as the MRI and CT scans will give you a full and precise picture of what is going on and that you find out soon what this small growth is. I can imagine this has come as a terrible shock to you especially if you are experiencing no symptoms at all and the process of waiting for results is not an easy one. It can feel a bit like you are  in limbo and it is common in a situation like this for your quality of sleep to be affected and for it to have an impact on your ability to function normally in your daily life. If you see that you are really struggling to get to sleep or that things are really tough for you during this long anxious wait, make sure you mention it to your GP who may be able to help or have some good suggestions for you.

As you say, it can be hard sometimes to talk to family and friends about this and this is why this forum can be a good place to find support from others who have been through something similar or who have had similar tests and symptoms. I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who understand how worried you are at the moment and that they will come along shortly and share their experiences with you.

While you are waiting,  I thought I would share with you our helpful tips to help you cope during this anxious time. I hope that you will find in there some successful strategies and I am keeping everything crossed that it all turns out to be nothing of concern and that you get some clarity soon on what this small growth might be.

    Best wishes,
