Anxiety regarding Mole - Melanoma?

Hi everyone,

I am a 26 year old woman who recently noticed an 11mm mole on my back.

At first, I thought I had a scratch or spot as I noticed pain around that area when resting my back on the sofa. I asked my partner to check my back and he noticed the spot and took a picture. The pain is like a burning pain.

The next day, I went to see my GP. My GP told me she wasn’t concerned and when I read my notes, she has noted that there was hair coming out of the mole, slight sensitivity when touching, uniform in colour and size.

I have taken another picture this evening and I have noticed the mole isn’t uniform in size, it is quite uneven actually. The colour is the same but the mole does seem to be slightly raised.

I have a history of suffering with health anxiety plus fibromyalgia. I am worried because of my history of health anxiety that my GP will not take me seriously. I only saw my GP on Tuesday and she told me to come back in 6 weeks. I’m unsure what to do. Would a private dermatologist be able to review do you think and then refer me to the NHS if they’re concerned as a GP would?

Thanks

  • Hi Lozzat001,

It's always a good idea when noticing a new mole or any changes to an existing mole to flag this with your GP so you did well to see a doctor and it's reassuring that they were not concerned. Since you are still worried and took another picture of the mole, you could consider getting a second opinion  and talking to a different GP just to double check that this mole doesn't need any further investigations.

You could also consider going private and seeing a dermatologist and you always have the option of going back to the NHS when you wish to do so. But perhaps you could in the first instance see a different GP and get a second opinion and ask them whether you should be referred to see a dermatologist.

We've had quite a few members of our forum who have come here because they were worried about a mole and I hope that you will hear from them shortly and that they will be happy to share their story with you.

Try not to worry too much but do speak to someone just to get the reassurance you need about this mole.

    Best wishes,
